Syllabus (or programme)

1. The turn-of-the-century crisis and the situation of aesthetic modernity. Modernism and its ideological “directions”. Bohemia and germinal attitudes. The novel: Unamuno, Baroja. Poetry: The Machado Brothers, Juan Ramón Jiménez. Theatre: Valle-Inclán, Benavente, Arniches. The essay.

   The generation of 1914 and the avant-garde. Ortega and other essayists. The novel: Pérez de Ayala and Miró. Ramón Gómez de la Serna. The avant-garde poets of the generation of 1927: Salinas and Guillén. Lorca and Alberti. Aleixandre and Cernuda. Prose and theatre. Literature in the Spanish republic. Literature and the Spanish Civil War. Exile.

   Literary trends after 1939. From human literature to social literature. Poetry. Blas de Otero, Gil de Biedma. The novel: Cela, Martín-Santos. Theatre: Buero Vallejo, Alfonso Sastre.

   Literary trends in recent decades. Poetry: from the “novísimos” ("newest ones") to the latest trends. The novel: from experimentalism to a reunion with the reader. Theatre: from neo-costumbrism to the neo-avant-garde.
